meson: Build fails with meson 0.55.3

meson.build:117:2: ERROR: Unknown method "substring" for a string.

We require 0.54 currently, but this substring thing was not released until 0.56... Could we have a local workaround for this or is it mandatory to bump the requirement to 0.56?
