Checkbox created with pdflatex cannot be checked

In the hyperref package of pdflatex, the Form environment has a \CheckBox command that creates a checkbox in a PDF document.

In evince, the checkbox is visible and the mouse changes on hover, but the checkmark does not appear on click.

In Acroread the checkbox can be checked and unchecked with no problem.
