Write more idiomatic code

Mathieu Bridon requested to merge maint/idiomatic-code into main

All of those were found by my unsuccessful attempt to use ruff, and the tool was right that those are more idiomatic.

I don't manage to configure ruff yet so not adding it to the CI just yet.
