Frédéric Péters just gave me an idea on how to work around #60 (closed) on our side, until things get fixed where they should.

This is a gross hack, but given how badly the issue impacts users, and for how long, I'm starting to think we should work around it, at least temporarily.

The pull request also bumps to 2.4, so that we make a quick release with just this bug fix.
